An Unsung Hero
Dr. Bob Berkowitz has always been a great ambassador for ShermanCollege in his home state of New Jersey. He visits local colleges to talk to students about a career in chiropractic, participates in career programs at high schools and has hosted career nights at his office.
And he was happy, he says, when Sherman College formalized the Ambassador Program in the late 1990s because that step gave him and other volunteers who do career related activities for the college a consistent support base. He knows he can count on support staff at the college to send him supplies, print material, guidelines and advice for successful recruiting. With such a program in place he knows the students he refers to Sherman will have a good experience as they explore chiropractic and their journey to admittance at the college.
Not long ago Berkowitz spent a part of two days at Middlesex County College, interacting with students as they investigated career and academic opportunities. He admits, “Even if I don’t discuss the specific prerequisites, I can tell them about making a great living and having a rewarding career in chiropractic.”
Berkowitz believes that any time you have a chance to talk chiropractic, your odds of another family getting under chiropractic care are increased. He also views his recruiting activities as a way to keep sharp in interacting with a particular sector of the population – in this case, the young.
The Samuel & Sandra Berkowitz Memorial Scholarship is named for Bob's parents.
In the early 1990s, Sherman College faced financial difficulties and its future was in question. Dr. Berkowitz generously provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to the college in interest-free loans from his retirement fund.
Without Dr. Berkowitz's infusion of capital, we might have had one less chiropractic college in this country. The story is a happy one because Sherman College has survived and thrived, and continues to teach, nurture, and graduate highly qualified students to bring the message and service of chiropractic to people everywhere.
Mr. and Mrs. Berkowitz instilled a fine civic and service ethic in their son Bob which he demonstrates daily in his chiropractic practice. Dr. Berkowitz is highly dedicated to supporting and promoting quality chiropractic care and service by volunteering and financially contributing to ShermanCollege as well as state and national chiropractic organizations.
To honor the high service ethic of the Berkowitz family, recipients of this scholarship must demonstrate a history of service in their applications.
The Berkowitz Memorial Scholarship was established by Len Mazza, D.C., also a Sherman College graduate (1986), who wanted to honor his chiropractic mentor, Dr. Berkowitz.

Interesting hub.
I just visited a Chiropractor for my stiffed lower back and neck. He massaged my neck and did some adjustment for my lower back. Was very helpful.
I have an air neck traction device at home. I know Chiropractor provide neck traction to patients too. What do you think about neck traction at home with an inflatable neck traction device. Air neck traction device is more comfortable and at the same time it provides you a strong neck traction.
I wrote a hub about home neck traction here:
