Chiropractic Leadership

Milton Garfunkel, D.C., Ph.C.

Dr. Milton W. Garfunkel, a 1922 graduate of Palmer College, was an inspiration and great source of support for Sherman. Dr. Garfunkel served on the Board of Regents and established a scholarship fund for needy students in his will. He supported Sherman financially and referred many students. Dr. Garfunkel worked closely with B.J. Palmer and was a vocal speaker for straight chiropractic in the early years. Dr. Garfunkel served on the Board of Control of the International Chiropractors Association, and as president, chairman of the Board and chairman of major committees of the New York State Chiropractic Association. He worked for many years to obtain licensure for chiropractors in New York. Dr. Garfunkel cared for patients of Drs. Mack and Kitty Scallon while they served time in jail for “practicing without a license.” He was leader of the American Bureau of Chiropractic, organizing patients into lay groups who worked for the legislation of chiropractic. These groups would fill Madison Square Garden  each year for a grad celebration. Dr. Garfunkel was also a member of the Federation of Straight Chiropractic Organizations. The following is a copy of Dr. Garfunkel’s personally written eulogy as delivered by Dr. Thom Gelardi.

Eulogy

My parting shall be in keeping with the law of life. The purpose of my creation has been fulfilled, there is no need for grief, sorrow or tears. My years of life were not without sin therefore my humble apology if such sinning caused inconvenience or discomfort. The moment has arrived that I am called upon to cross the Great Divide. I chose to serve my existence as a healer. During an extended period of such service many came for alleviation of pain and suffering. My ability to fulfill the demand of my chosen work is a matter of record. Compassionate concern for the sick was ever uppermost in the application of my heritage. The extreme satisfaction to witness recovery of a suffering human being was part and an important agent of compensation for efforts and labors offered, far greater than a monetary fortune to be amassed. As it is with all mortal flesh when that last breath is drawn a lifetime existence soon becomes a memory. I shall remain on in the memories of those whose gratitude will not be lost with my passing. My long life span has carried beyond the three score and ten, most of which was devoted to serving the sick a privilege which brought a life of fulfillment, accomplishment, excitement, and indeed a most rewarding career. I leave for my final resting place fully aware that my mission on Earth was to serve my fellowmen in a most profound and altruistic calling. This was done to the best of my ability and the record of my efforts shall so speak. To my family, friends and patients knowing that passing thru this world brought to you some measure of happiness, contentment and relief of suffering then my living has not been in vain.

Do not shed tears nor morn but rather carry on in the memories I leave with you. Till we meet again Au Revoir. This eulogy shall be presented by whomever so chosen.
