Heritage Society Regents

Dr. Ercil Beane and his wife Maxine, who passed away in February of this year, were long time supporters of Sherman College, serving as Regents for more than 30 years. They were charter members of the Sherman College Heritage Society, an elite group of individuals who have distinguished themselves by making a strong commitment to the future of Sherman College through donations in excess of $100,000. Their son, Joel Beane, D.C., and his wife, Rita Frederick, of Marshalltown, IA, are currently members of the distinguished Board of Regents. Sherman College presented him with the Honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities Degree in 1979, when he delivered the commencement address at graduation. Sherman also named him Chiropractor of the Year in 1985.

Maxine Beane attended Iowa State Teacher’s College and was a valued assistant to her husband, Ercil, in chiropractic clinics, lectures and research. She served as program editor for the United Society of Friends Women for three years and as international president of the United Society of Friends Women for six years. She participated in many church organizations and served on national and international boards. She was a writer, teacher and retreat leader and served as photographer for professional and mission work during the couple’s travels. Sherman previously honored her with the Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities degree in 1983 when she delivered the charge to the graduation class.
